What Drives Each Status

New → Returning

Trigger: They come back for a second session.

Returning → Engaged

Trigger: Score exceeds 25. This happens when they:

  • View 5+ pages, OR
  • Spend 2+ minutes on site, OR
  • Visit high-value pages (pricing, demo, contact)

Engaged → Hot Lead

Trigger: Score exceeds 60. This happens when they:

  • View many pages AND spend significant time, OR
  • Complete a secondary conversion (form fill, download, etc.)

Hot Lead → Customer

Trigger: Complete a primary conversion (purchase, signup, trial start).

High-Value Pages (Boost Engagement Score)

Visiting these pages gives bonus points:

  • /pricing, /purchase, /checkout, /cart
  • /contact, /demo, /trial, /signup
  • /product, /solution, /features, … etc.

Why It Matters

Engagement Status = Behavior, Not Identity

It's based on what visitors do, not who they are:

  • More pages + more time = Higher status
  • Return visits = Shows commitment
  • Conversions = Unlocks customer statuses

A visitor with 1 session viewing 2 pages = New

Same visitor returns, views 10 pages, spends 5 min = Engaged or Hot Lead

Practical Value

This automated scoring system eliminates manual visitor classification and provides objective, behavior-based segmentation. Teams can identify high-intent prospects (Hot Leads) without guesswork, prioritize outreach to engaged visitors, and monitor customer health through risk stages. The transparent scoring logic ensures consistent visitor evaluation across the platform, enabling data-driven decisions about who to target, when to follow up, and where to focus retention efforts.
